The Love of God 3
"If you, then, though you are evil (sinful by nature), know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:11
In Jesus' Sermon on the Mountain he reasons with his followers to ask for good gifts from God, and to keep on asking. How can you ask of someone you cannot see, hear, taste, touch or smell you may ask? So Jesus reasons with us! Hey, you know how to be a good dad or mom and get good gifts for your kids, just think about Christmas or birthday presents; think about the everyday necessities. You buy them clothes, you go to the grocery stores for food, you get them their favorite cereal and snacks. You send them to the best school you can, set them up for extra curricular activities, read them bed-time stories, snuggle with them on the couch, give them a band-aid when they get a booboo. Remember the joy you felt in your heart when you watched your child open that present, the one they had been longing for, the one you had worked hard and sacrificed for because you loved them so much!
Now compare the amount of thought, effort and sacrifice you put into your children, because you love them, and multiply it by infinity....that's how much God loves you and me. He is our Father and all the wonderful attributes of a father. Not a boss or taskmaster, not some far off employer or relative, not even some unengaged idol to be worshipped...he's our Father, who wants the very best for each of His children.
Now the word father may bring a variety of thoughts and emotions to many of us. Some may have had dearly loving parents, some may have had harsh or abusive ones, others may have had absent or unengaged ones and for some you may not know who your mother or father are. However, we all have a Father in Heaven who loves us immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine. You can start getting to know Him today.
Some Questions to ask.
1: Are you asking God to reveal himself you you?
2: What are some attributes that come to mind of what a good father is?
3: What are some emotions that come to mind when you think of God? Write them out.
4: What would be a "good gift" you would like from God?
Keep praying and asking questions, God will reveal himself to you.
