Lesson 6
Jesus The Bread of Life
"Jesus answered, 'The work of God is this: to believe in the one he sent."
Read John Chapter 6
The first 3rd of this chapter gives the accounts of Jesus feeding over 5,000 people from 5 loaves of bread and 2 small fish and walking miles on water; both miracles that continue to show Jesus' power over everything. In a world today that "super-sizes" food, just imagine your little "happy" meal going to feed your entire school or half your town.
Having performed these miracles lots of people are following Jesus and asking lots of questions; and Jesus uses this opportunity to turn their humanistic, earthly thinking towards the Spiritual. After a discussion about bread and manna (a reference to manna & quail in Exodus 16) Jesus makes a statement "whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them." Now if I didn't know Jesus and this was the first thing I heard him say, I would think that Jesus was advocating cannibalism. How do we eat his flesh and drink his blood? While he's still alive? Do we boil him, roast him or saute him with some vegetables and seasonings? (This is what happens when you take scripture out of context).
However, Jesus is not talking physical, he's talking Spiritual and he's given us some clues along the way. The first one is this "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." The second clue is "I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never goes thirsty." It's all about believing (faith) that Jesus is who he says he is and that he has the power over everything. By coming to Jesus we are fed Spiritually; (Bread) and by believing in him our thirst is quenched and satisfied, (Blood). This will become even more clearer when you read about The Last Supper.
Some questions to ask.
1: Do you believe that Jesus is who he says he is; the Son of God?
2: Do you believe that Jesus loves you, personally?
3: Do you believe that Jesus wants a relationship with you because he loves you?
4: Or do you believe that Jesus wants you to work or perform to earn his love?
5: Will you turn away like some of his followers, or will you continue on to grow in your relationship with him.
I recommend continuing on :D
