Lesson 2

Jesus Turns Water Into Wine

"What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which He revealed His glory; and the disciples believed in Him."     John 2:11

Read John Chapter 2

So Jesus & his friends go to a wedding. If it was anything like today's weddings, a group of people, close families, friends & relatives would have come together to witness and celebrate the joining of a man & woman in marriage. It would have been a joyous occasion, the Bride looking gorgeous and the Groom looking the best he ever has, plenty of food, music and lots of wine & drink. Friends would be gathered together in smaller groups at tables and there would be lots of talk and laughter and no doubt a few people over indulging.....it's a Party!

But at some point the booze starts to run out, maybe a little early and Jesus' mother wants the party to keep going; so she goes to Jesus to take care of it. She knows who he is and what he is capable of doing. So Jesus gets 6 water jars holding between 80-120 litres of water each and turns it in to wine. Now I don't know how big the wedding reception is but let's say it's about 300 people, that's a good size party, and they've already gone through all the wine and maybe feeling a little tipsy at this point. Let's say the average water jar is 100 litres x 6 jars = 600 litres. That means each person gets at least 2 bottles of wine. The average modern day bottle of wine is 750ml (3/4 of a litre) which holds around 5 glasses of wine, so at the minimum they get another 10 glasses of wine and a little plonked! Later we find out from the Master of the Banquet that it's not your cheap bargain store brand....it's the Best!

So here are some questions.

1: How would you feel hanging out with this guy having just seen him turn water into wine?

2: If God gives his best turning water into wine, what other areas would he give his best?

3: Notice Jesus doesn't go around saying to the guests "Now make sure you drink in moderation." What does that tell you about his desire to control people?

If you are enjoying getting to know Jesus, keep reading the Book of John...it gets better!!!
